Economics Papers: Writing Tips

Is your nana to economics as a subject, the chances are that you need some assistance. Сheck out these writing tips at https://writers-house.com/ to learn how to write great papers on economics.

1. Stick with a professional tone. Your tone should be impersonal and based on facts. Imagine that you’re a journalist who needs to persuade readers using facts, not emotions or personal opinions.

2. Write in the present tense. It’s not a universal requirement for all kinds of papers but in economics, papers are usually written in the present tense. Therefore, you should write “Brown finds that…” instead of “Brown found that…”

3. Write short sentences. Some students prefer long sentences because they think that such an approach will make them look smarter. The truth is that readers don’t want to dig through your complicated sentences trying to understand what you mean. Your writing must be clear and easy to understand.

4. Avoid using the passive voice. Although you can use the passive voice in some disciplines, we recommend that you avoid it when writing about economics. Instead of writing “the effects were measured…,” write “we measured the effects…”

5. Use the first person correctly. Here is another difference between papers on economics and papers on science. Scientists always avoid the first person and when they need to use it, they prefer the plural form “we” over “I.” However, in economics, you can use the first person whenever you want. You can also use the words “I” and “we” literally.

6. Put dates in brackets. When writing a paper on economics, it’s better to write “Brown (1997) finds that…” than “in his 1997 study, Brown found that…”

7. If you need to provide any extra information, use footnotes. Footnotes are a great tool when there is useful information that isn’t directly related to your argument but can help your readers better understand some details or the background of the issue.

8. Don’t use too specific technical terms or jargon. This is a common mistake among students. Some students think that this way, they’ll make their writing more professional while in fact, it only hurts the readability of the text.

9. Another common misconception is that it’s better to write more words. Quite often, you should meet strict requirements regarding the word count. We recommend that you choose to write briefly instead of adding filler words, trying to make your paper longer. Avoid repetition and don’t include any unnecessary sentences.

10. Read papers on economics and learn this style. The more you read, the better you understand what your papers should look like and what exactly your audience expects to read.
